Reporting in the Times suggests that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will consider whether to fight on or step down overnight. An unnamed minister tells the paper, "he needs to be able to leave with dignity". It also quotes Housing Secretary Steve Reed, who is reported as saying at a Spectator magazine event, "if anyone thinks there is a caped superhero that is coming our way with all the answers, they have another thing coming".
The Daily Telegraph claims Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has chosen to stand in a constituency with significant support for Reform UK, because he aims to show that he can defeat Nigel Farage in a general election.
The Guardian says Labour's National Executive Committee – the body which will decide whether or not Burnham can stand as a candidate – will make its decision quickly, possibly later today.
A profile of Burnham in the Financial Times quotes one MP who says, "he's very conflict averse. Andy wants to be loved and avoids making difficult decisions". Another says "I think the view is that he's not the messiah. But he's a damn sight better than what we've got".
Above photos of Burnham, former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, and former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, the Daily Mirror's headline reads "and so it begins…" The Daily Mail's front page has a four word headline above different photos of the same three potential candidates – the paper's take is "God help us all".
The i Paper makes bleak reading for the prime minister, saying: "Whatever we might individually think of Starmer, it's over. So the question is not whether it should be done but how it is done."
The Daily Star's editorial laments "the constant succession of underperformers" in No 10 in recent years, which it believes has "made the UK appear weak and indecisive".
Meanwhile in an interview with the Sun, Reform UK's leader Nigel Farage says "I believe Britain is broken at every level". Farage also predicts that a major economic downturn is around the corner, and describes the prospect of one day becoming prime minister as "slightly daunting" – but says his party is now "two thirds ready" to govern.
