Israel kills 14 in southern Lebanon after trading fire with Iran

Killings come as Iran warned of ‘crushing blows’ if Israeli attacks continued in Lebanon, including in the south.

Israel continues strikes on Lebanon despite halting attacks on Iran

Israeli forces have killed at least 14 people and wounded dozens in air attacks across southern Lebanon after Iran warned of “crushing measures” if Israel presses ahead with its assault on the country.

The killings on Monday came after Iran and Israel traded fire in the most significant escalation since their “ceasefire” began on April 8.

The flare-up was triggered by an Israeli attack on Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, on Sunday.

According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, an Israeli strike near a Red Cross centre in the southern coastal city of Tyre killed five people and wounded eight others, including four paramedics.

The bombardment also damaged a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tyre, and authorities warned residents remaining in the city to avoid public gatherings.

Further north, an Israeli air strike on al-Marwaniyah in the Sidon district killed two people, including a child. Ten others were wounded, including four women.

A third Israeli strike on Zefta in the Nabatieh district killed seven people and wounded eight. A Syrian child and a woman were among the victims. Israeli artillery also shelled the nearby village of Touline.

The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, which has been fighting invading Israeli troops in southern Lebanon, claimed to have carried out 16 operations against Israeli forces, including near the strategic Beaufort Castle.

The group said it had targeted and destroyed two Israeli military bulldozers in the village of Yohmor al-Shaqif near the castle and struck multiple enemy troop concentrations. It also said it intercepted an Israeli drone operating in the airspace over Iqlim al-Tuffah.

Lebanon was drawn into the US-Israel war on Iran on March 2, when the Tehran-aligned Hezbollah fired rockets at northern Israel, citing continued Israeli attacks on the country and the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28.

While the US and Iran agreed a ceasefire on April 8, Israel has not halted its campaign in Lebanon, insisting the two fronts are separate.

Iran, however, has long maintained that any peace deal with Washington must include an end to fighting in Lebanon.

Announcing the end of its strikes on Israel on Monday, Iran’s military warned that continued aggression – including in southern Lebanon – would be met with “much more severe and crushing measures”.

But Israeli Minister of Defence Israel Katz rejected the warning, pledging to press ahead with operations against Hezbollah and to launch attacks on Beirut’s southern suburbs in response to any strikes on northern Israel.

“Any Iranian attempt to link Lebanon and Iran and attack Israel will be met with great force,” he said.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, meanwhile, said on Monday that Israel has carried out nearly 3,500 air strikes, 407 demolitions, and six so-called “razing” operations – which have flattened entire villages – since April 16.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health said the overall death toll from the Israeli offensive since March 2 has risen to 3,637, with a further 11,188 wounded.

More than one million people, or a fifth of Lebanon’s population, have been displaced.

Salam’s office said that government shelters “have reached maximum absorption capacity in Beirut, Sidon, and all other regions”.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC), meanwhile, warned that Lebanon’s humanitarian crisis was worsening, with 94 percent of displaced people struggling to meet their basic needs.

Many of those returning to southern Lebanon were finding their homes or entire villages destroyed, said Rick Bartoldus, the IRC’s country director for Lebanon.

“The humanitarian needs are massive, and if we have any hope of recovery, we need to see a lasting ceasefire,” he told Al Jazeera.

ICC prosecutor suspended pending vote on sexual misconduct claims

Published

Karim Khan rejects suspension as ICC governing body refers him to disciplinary proceedings before member states.

The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, has been suspended from his duties, the tribunal’s governing body said, following a probe into sexual misconduct allegations.

In a statement on Monday, the Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties said it will refer Khan to disciplinary proceedings before all 125 ICC member states, which will vote on his fate in a special session.

“This suspension is not an indication of the final outcome,” it said.

The bureau, which is the executive committee of the court’s oversight body, said it referred Khan after making its own decision on the disciplinary proceedings involving the prosecutor.

It said the decision was based on a report of a United Nations investigation, the advice of an ad hoc panel of judicial experts, and written submissions, but did not give details about what it had decided.

“The decision of the Bureau and the related documentation will remain confidential,” the statement said.

Khan’s lawyers said in a statement that he rejected the decision in the strongest terms, and repeated his denial of any wrongdoing.

“The decision is unlawful, procedurally unfair and unsupported by evidence,” the statement said.

Khan, 56, drew international attention when he applied for warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.

He also sought warrants for Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar, for the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel.

Khan was among the first to be sanctioned by Israel’s ally, the United States, which expressed outrage over the arrest warrants.

He has maintained that the misconduct probe is a politically motivated smear campaign.

According to Reuters and the Associated Press news agencies, the UN probe found a “factual basis” for the allegations of sexual misconduct made by a female aide. However, a three-judge panel selected by the executive committee for a legal assessment of the findings found that the investigation was not conclusive enough.

Khan’s lawyers had previously told Reuters that the judges had unanimously concluded that the “factual findings do not establish misconduct or breach of duty”.

Khan has not led the ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor since last May, when he took a voluntary leave of absence pending the outcome of the inquiry.

He is the first ICC prosecutor to be formally suspended from his role by the court’s oversight body.

Only the Assembly of States Parties has the authority to remove Khan from office, a move that would require a majority in a secret ballot of its 125 member states.

Sixty-three countries would need to support a measure to remove him.

No date was immediately set for the session.

Khan’s suspension will have little practical impact on the functioning of the court, given his existing leave of absence.

He has already been removed from pleading in the ICC’s most high-profile current case, against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
